Sleep Deprivation – Are You Obsessed?

12 Jan, 2008  |  Written by Heather  |  under life - inside out

Have you swore that you’ll go to bed early, only to find yourself sitting at your computer past midnight wondering where the evening went. It seems that as time goes on, we’re getting much less sleep then we used to.

How much is enough? If you ask me, I would say about 9 hours. My husband would say about 5 hours and my 14 month old son would say about 14 hours in increments of 50 minutes.

There is never enough time in the day to get everything done, people racing around and caffeine at every corner. It’s only natural that we push ourselves to the limits, or is it?

How Much Sleep Do We Really Need?

According to an article on WebMD, how much sleep we require depends on several factors:

  • Your inherited genetic need for sleep
  • Your daily routine (those daily activities you control, from drinking coffee or alcohol to smoking and exercise)
  • The quality of your sleep
  • Your 24-hour daily cycle known as the circadian rhythm

The bottom line is that you should wake up feeling relatively refreshed, and you should generally not feel sleepy during the day.
Apparently most people are not getting enough sleep so I am not alone.
